Experience gained from the Fukushima-Daiichi accident as input for developing a technical knowledge base including remediation technologies

Miyahara, Kaname; Iijima, Kazuki; Saito, Kimiaki

Jiban Kogakkai-Shi, 63(11/12), p.62 - 69, 2015/11

AA2015-0380.pdf:1.64MB

This review provides a concise overview of knowledge and experience gained from the activities for environmental remediation after the Fukushima Dai-ichi accident as input for developing a technical knowledge base including remediation technologies which is translated into actions that enable the rapid return of evacuees. It is reflecting JAEA's key role in the research associated with both remediation of contaminated areas and the natural processes influencing contamination migration in non-remediated areas, working together with a number of Japanese and international organisations and research institutes. This review also provides a perspective on the future actions required to remediate areas outside the Fukushima Dai-ichi site.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) consulted an assessment committee, "Evaluation Committee of Research and Development Activities for Fukushima Environment" (Committee) for ex-post and ex-ante evaluations of "Research and Development of the technologies for Fukushima Environment Recovery" in accordance with national guidelines and JAEA's regulations including "General Guideline for the Evaluation of Government Research and Development (R&D) Activities" by Cabinet Office. In response to the JAEA's request, the Committee evaluated the R&D activities during the 2nd Period of Mid-Term Research Plan (from March 2011 to March 2015) as ex-post evaluation and the R&D plans during the 3rd Period of Mid- to Long-Term Research Plan (from April 2015 to March 2022) as ex-ante evaluation. The Committee evaluated the R&D activities and programs based on the explanatory materials prepared by JAEA and its oral presentations with Q&A sessions. This report presents the results of the evaluation.

For a construction of maintenance and storage scenarios for JSNS, lives of structure material need to be estimated. DPA (Displacement per Atom) was a major index of radiation damage. So we evaluated DPA value of each component. Function of the DPA calculation was equipped to the PHITS code, which was particle and heavy ion transport code. For DPA calculation, displacement cross section was necessary. Displacement cross sections of neutron below 150 MeV were processed by the NJOY code from LA150 library and those of neutron above 150MeV and proton in the all energy region were obtained from energies of fragments calculated in the PHITS. By using the PHITS, we calculated DPA values and DPA mapping. We obtained that the peak DPA values at end of 5000MWh operation were 4.1 for target vessel, 2.8 for reflector and moderator vessels, and 0.4 for proton beam windows, respectively. We estimated the target life at 1 year and the moderator life at 6 year.

Synchrotron radiation photoemission electron microscopy study on artificially Cs-adsorbed clay mineral

Yoshigoe, Akitaka

no journal, ,

After the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in 2011, decontamination of radioactive cesium is a major concern for recovering from the environmental damage. It is generally known that Cs is irreversibly incorporated into clay minerals such as weathered biotite. Therefore, the development of efficient way to remove Cs has motivated research into understanding Cs adsorption and its physicochemical properties. Synchrotron radiation photoemission electron microscope (SR-PEEM) was applied to perform the pinpoint analysis of micrometer-sized weathered biotite particles with artificially adsorbed Cs. Spatial distributions of constituent elements were observed with nanometer resolution. Spatially resolved X-ray absorption spectra of the Cs M- and Fe L-edges were measured to determine the chemical states of each atom. The results demonstrate the utility of SR-PEEM as a tool for nanoscale chemical analyses of various environmental substances.
